Since Mary MacCaffrie, public education administrator for the New Hampshire Office of the Fire Marshal, along with Dottie Gove, program director of Home Care for Child and Family Services in New Hampshire, were trained on NFPA’s Remembering When™ program during the Scholarship Conference, the program partners have not only conducted numerous presentations on the fire and fall prevention program for older adults, but put together a list of helpful hints for other teams making presentations.
“Lessons learned from each other can be powerful,” says MacCaffrie. “When someone shared a story (at a presentation), we usually added, ‘What could you have done to be prepared for that emergency?’ ”
Mary and Dottie also have the following tips:
• Give people time to talk about their experiences. It gives them the opportunity to teach and learn from each another.
• Keeping the presentation interactive.
• Try to get on the calendar early. Many senior centers schedule their programs a few months in advance.
• Add humor. Everyone loves a good laugh.
This year NFPA is selecting teams from up to 25 communities to participate in the Remembering When™ Conference. The Conference will be held November 4-6 in Orlando, Florida. Participants will receive training to reach older adults with fire and fall prevention education through group presentations and home visits. Applications must be submitted by noon on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.
The team will include a fire department life safety educator and a home health visiting professional or volunteer from an agency serving older adults, such as visiting nurses, church outreach groups, civic organizations, and meal delivery programs. New for 2015, teams may opt to add a third member who fits one of the categories and strengthens the team.
